Research Blog: Music Video Conventions
In general, music videos contain multiple components that
deliver the lyrics of the song through a visual outlook. Common conventions in
a music video are long shots, close ups, and mid shots. Close ups are most
common out of the three, as it is the clearest way to deliver the emotions of a
character in a music video as well as to help the audience understand the plot
of the video better. Since this is a music video there will be a lack of dialogue
and therefore a lack of context, which will have to be made up for through the
facial expressions and actions of those in the video which can be best captured
through close ups. Not all music videos tell a story but regardless, close up shots
remain very common. Tilts, tracking, and pans are among the many camera
movements that can be found in a music video.
Mise en scene vary for music videos as they are dependent on the story
being told in the music video as well as the song itself. For example, the
music video for the song Old Town Road included horses, cowboy hats and boots
as the song was country themed. Lighting, like Mise en scene, is dependent on
the music video itself. For example, for happier themed videos there will be a
frequent amount of high key lighting while darker themed videos most likely
contain low key lighting. Each method of lighting represents different moods.
Costumes depend on the story plot of the music video as it determines, setting,
location, and time (era) of the video. Costumes in a more casual video will
feature everyday people with everyday clothes while the song Old Town Road
featured western clothing. Music videos are typically based on the songs
featuring in the videos and songs can fall into multiple genres ranging from
hip hop to indie music. The song I selected happens to fall in the genre of
romance, while the song discusses the darker side of love it remains romance,
nonetheless. Not all, but most romance themed music videos include a love story
between two individuals. For example, Taylor Swift is known for her profound
amount of love songs and in her music videos you can typically see her starring
in it along with a male character. Romance music videos Mise en Scene is on a
wide range, depending on the song. Music videos can be limited if the song has
limits like mentioning a specific place; New York Times Square was only made in
1904 and therefore a song mentioning this place will most likely not have a
music video set in an era of Ancient Greece 200 BC. Romance videos can feature
crumbling loves, developing loves, young love, old love, and even multiple loves;
it is not restricted to one specific societal set idea of love. In the music
video for the song Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis there is a gay couple
featured. In my music video I plan to create a love between animals of two
different species: hamster and dog, an uncommon love. Since my actors are
animals and have not mastered the concept of displaying emotions on cue, I will
use a lot of symbolization and context clues to develop the plot of the story.
