Genre Decision
The genre I chose to do for this final project is a romantic
comedy. I don’t exactly like romance films, but if it’s paired with comedy it
turns into one of my favorite types of films. Romantic comedies fit my
circumstances best. Romantic comedies usually occur in a modern everyday
setting. Themes like fantasy or western would be hard to portray for a student beginner
film. I also have potential actors (my brother who is currently in a
relationship), to portray the romantic aspect of the film. I believe my personality
and ideas will incorporate comedy best into the film making it a romantic
comedy. Romantic comedies use common conventions of both romance and comedy
films but have a few differences that separate it from both genres. Romantic comedies
focus on lighthearted humor centered around romantic ideas. They have coined
the names ‘Rom-Com’ and ‘Chick-Flick’, due to the audience primarily being
female. Due to it being a combination of both romance and comedy the conventions
in the sub-genre can be flipped. Unlike in a romance film the circumstance in a
rom com can be very extreme. For example, the love story could be during a time
of zombies or in a world where monsters exist. A sort of ironic situation is
presented that presents a laugh and provides a lighthearted likeable
entertaining love story. Some common camera shots are close ups, two shots,
medium shots, establishing shot, over the shoulder shot, and a mid-shot. An
over the shoulder and two shot can help to establish the relationship between
the two characters shown or the development shown between two characters. Based
on the body language they can either be represented as friends or in a romantic
relationship. Some elements of a
romantic comedy are likable characters; the characters must be relatable for
the audience. The protagonists would usually have a clash in personalities that
aid towards the comedic aspect of romantic comedies. Romantic comedies tend to
deal with more adult driven jokes and innuendos.
