Genre Research: Action
Through a PowerPoint project done in
the beginning of the school year I was able to discover the conventions and
components of the action genre. We were offered multiple genres to choose from,
but I decided on action, since it was my favorite type of genre. In this
project I investigated the common sounds, angles, camera movements, mise-en-Scene,
as well as elements of action. I later reflected on what I learned about the
action genre in film by describing my likes and dislikes of the genre. I found
that the elements of action are clearly defined heroes, and continuous motion and action. This
includes physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. To consistently keep
up with the vast amount movement that takes place in action film, camera movements
like tracking, pan, steadicam, and zooming are used. Common angles in the
action genre are eye level angles, low angles, high angles, and Dutch angles. High
angles show powerlessness like displayed in Godzilla and King Kong Point of
views. Dutch angles can show disorientation, which can be highly apparent in
action due to physical fights; portrays the fighting as real. Lighting in
action films can alternate between three point and low-key lighting. Action
films utilize both diegetic and nondiegetic sounds, like bone crushing, mysterious
phone ringing, dialogue, and stings. Most typically include an original score
or soundtrack. Like most films the costumes in an action film depend on the
setting and time interval of the film. Props of an action film are also
dependent on the setting and period of the film, but the most commonly used
prop is guns. Action is typically paired with other genres like science fiction.
Some examples of action films are The Equalizer, Bad Boys, and Transformers.
Transformers is an example of action and sci-fi being combined to create a
film. There were multiple stunts and battles, but the plot was based on a
science fiction theme. After researching and detailing action through this
project I discovered my dislikes for the fall period of action films. I do
however love the physical stunts, chases, fighting, and battles in action films.
