Genre Research: Romance and Comedy

Romance is a type of genre that portrays a loving relationship as the main element. Romance is centered around love between individuals. There is typically a struggle through the relationship and romance films typically have an optimistic ending. Throughout history romance films have been majorly centered around a man and woman, typically told from the woman’s point of view. Common sounds in a romantic film are nondiegetic which serves as a way for the audience to decipher the mood of the scene in a film. There is usually heavy dialogue and some romance films typically use voiceovers by the main female character. Some mise en scene in romance films are flowers, usually roses which are a symbol of love. Costumes can range from casual comfortable clothing to formal clothing for things that appear in romance films like dates. Common date spots are used as settings for romance films including the beach, restaurants, parks, etc. The setting can also be the living or workspaces of the main characters; usually places that represent their daily lives. Common editing in romance films are fade ins and outs, dissolves, shot reverse shots, and flash back affect. Common camera shots are close ups that show the emotions of the characters and over the shoulder shots that engage the audience into the conversation.  I don’t have any dislikes with the genre in itself, nor do I have any likes. I usually try to avoid romance films. Comedy is a genre intended to be humorous and induce laughter. There are multiple types of comedy from slapstick comedy which uses physical movement and gestures. Dark humor and wordplay are also examples of comedy. Dark humor deals with disturbing subjects and wordplay uses clever, subtle manipulation of language. The Mise En Scene of comedy, like the setting, usually depends on the plot and subgenres of the film. Some common settings are bright places, towns, etc. In teen comedies the setting would be a high school and/or a small town. Some types of comedies with a sub-genre are romantic comedies, anarchic comedies, and screwball comedies. Multiple camera shots are used, though the most frequent are close ups and point of view shots. Low and high angles are the most used camera angles and zooming is usually used for camera movements. There are multiple kinds of zooms used like a quick zoom and a push in and push out. The push in and push out are similar to the zoom in and zoom out, but the camera is physically moving, sometimes through a crowd of people or other objects. I enjoy comedy, but not all types of comedy. Slapstick Comedy is something I don’t particularly gravitate towards, as I see it as juvenile. I do enjoy dark humor and the type of movies that play with a a more adult humor like Tyler Perry Madea films.
