Genre Research: The Ugly Truth

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your
final task on does this movie have?
Some elements in this movie that I
plan to include in my film is the clash of personalities. I plan to establish
both characters in the relationship as polar opposite individuals, just as in
the movie. This will first inform the audience of the biggest obstacle in the
whole film. The audience will better appreciate the fact that both characters
were able to look past each other’s differences and even began to understand
those differences and fall in love.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you
like?
The type of comedy presented in the
movie highly appealed to me. Rather than slapstick humor, something you would see
in a movie like the Three Stooges, an adult humor was displayed throughout. The
humor was mature and allowed the film to target an older audience. This is an
element I would like my film to have. My plan is to target and older audience, but
not exclusive to the stereotypical female audience.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did
not appeal to you?
Romantic comedies have the element
of obstacles. The couple goes through multiple obstacles that prove their love.
In this movie there was another man and both characters chose to not share
their feelings with each other despite them being mutual. This tends to occur
in multiple romantic comedies. The audience is aware of the feelings between
then two characters and this builds up a frustration. I did not particularly
like the angst and frustrated feeling I got form watching the two fail at love.
The goal is that, eventually when the two come together in an epic confession
the audience feels a greater sense of satisfaction. I was a bit annoyed. It took
a while for both to build up the courage to confess.
