Filming Blog - Faye and Kevin's Individual Scenes + Beach Waves Scene

Image
When I began filming, I first began to film the hardest parts of what I planned in my storyboard. On Friday, November 27, 2020, I took a trip to the beach and got shots of the waves. The waves at the time weren’t as rough as I wanted them to be, but they still were impactful. I first went up to the pier and filmed the waves and later went down to the sand and got shots of the waves crashing against the sand. Unfortunately, I was not able to take my dog to the beach and therefore I couldn’t get any shots of her sitting near the shore and staring into the distance. When I arrived at the beach, I realized that bringing her most likely wouldn’t have worked out, since there were people there and she gets easily distracted. The waves and water would have scared her too and it was hot and would have been bad for her due to her fur. The rest of the scenes could be filmed at home, so I just decided to begin filming the easiest scenes. I filmed the solo scenes of my dog (Storyboard Box 8)....

Planning Story Board for my Music Video

Image
Box 1-6 Box 7-12 Box 1- The first scene will establish a symbolism representing Faye (my dog) as the ocean. As the first lyrics of the song are, “I am like a wave”, that scene would correlate perfectly with the song. I will record the waves crashing against the scene and get shots of Faye looking out into the ocean. Box 2- Like the first box, box 2 will also establish symbolism with Kevin (hamster) being represented as the moon.  The moon affects the ocean with its gravitational pull. First the full moon will appear, and Kevin will fade into the moon in his hamster ball. Box 3- This box shows one of the lovely moments Kevin and Faye has together. They can be seen cuddled together on the couch. Box 4- This box display Faye and Kevin walking down the sidewalk together. Box 5- Once again another sweet moment is displayed, but this time Kevin is not in his hamster ball alike all the previous moments. Box 6- The rough waves represent the change of their happy relationshi...

Planning for my Music Video

Image
Since the song I chose falls into the romance category for music, I will be using two individuals to display a struggling love. I plan to use my dog Faye and my cousin’s hamster Kevin. The song I chose is called tyl by Kakie. The song discusses struggling young lovers, with one party filled with hope to make the relationship work but faced with the constant disappointment provided by the other party. She describes a hope for easy young love is while simultaneously facing the reality that it is not possible, at least not anymore.     Location Due to limited locations caused by our current situation, I only plan to film in a few places. I will film in neutral areas of my house (in front of a wall/couch), at the beach, and there'll be a few shots outside (sidewalk or grassy area). I will have a space set up that will be covered ...

Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

Image
In general, music videos contain multiple components that deliver the lyrics of the song through a visual outlook. Common conventions in a music video are long shots, close ups, and mid shots. Close ups are most common out of the three, as it is the clearest way to deliver the emotions of a character in a music video as well as to help the audience understand the plot of the video better. Since this is a music video there will be a lack of dialogue and therefore a lack of context, which will have to be made up for through the facial expressions and actions of those in the video which can be best captured through close ups. Not all music videos tell a story but regardless, close up shots remain very common. Tilts, tracking, and pans are among the many camera movements that can be found in a music video.  ...

Introduction to the Music Video Project

Image
Due to the current circumstances of the virus I decided to work alone. I also decided to work alone because I don’t know many people in the class, and the one person that I do know has a busy schedule and wouldn’t be able to meet up and film as often as we would need to. I’m the type of person that works better and faster alone, so I don’t have a problem with working alone. For my music video I chose to the song tyl by Kakie, released in 2019. I recently discovered this song in a Filipino TV show I was watching called Gaya sa Pelikula which translates to Like in the Movies , and I instantly fell in love with the song. The song follows the plot of two struggling young lovers, which can be easily portrayed in a music video. The song also mentions waves and the moon, which are two reoccurring images that can be played throughout the video as symbolism. Not only do the lyrics of the song appeal to me, but the beats and chorus are unique and moving and is great music v...

Critical Reflection Questions: Mr. Split Bananas Commercial

Image
    1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues? As I was more familiar with the action genre, I decided to use that as the base of my commercial. A hero vs. villain plot and fighting sequence were among the many conventions of the action genre I used in this commercial. The commercial started off with an immediate conflict that the protagonist, Mr. Split, would later come to resolve. The protagonist and villain have a fight scene where the villain is seen being defeated but eventually delivers one significant blow that demonstrates an equal power between the two. The hero eventually overpowers the villain with one final blow, as most protagonist in the action genre tend to do.   The audios included were fighting sounds (punching and kicking), grunting, and intense music. 2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text? Throughout my commercial I did not...

Mr. Split Final

Throughout  this project there were many ups and downs. I had to deal with moody actors, rotten bananas, and lack of time. Eventually I got everything together and my project was successful even though everything didn't turn out as planned.  I initially wanted the actors to switch off but I Instead used one person. The location I set for one of the scenes was also changed. It was extremely hard to squeeze my commercial into 30 seconds, but I somehow managed. I learned a lot through this project and had a lot of fun filming and editing this commercial

Editing Process for First Half of Mr. Split Bananas Commercial

Image
Once all the files I needed were imported through my camera and into my editing software, I began to start editing. I first started by trimming down each part since I filmed continuously in one take. Once I trimmed down each video to the part I wanted, I looked over the video and found that some of the parts weren’t timed correctly. For the close up of the banana being snatched I found that it was filmed to slow and I had to speed it up to fit the pace of the commercial better. I was also over the amount of time I previously set for the first half of the commercial. Before I finalized all editing of the first half the video was 19 seconds long, 4 seconds over the maximum time, I wanted the first half to be. To fix this I cut the beginning and end. The part in the beginning, where I was on my phone, seemed to prolong and I had no problem cutting it down. The ending, where Mr. Split runs out, was also easy to trim; I just cut to where he went out of frame. I cut out a part in the middle ...
